Your Teaching Job

Candidates accepted into the Chicago Teaching Fellows program will be assigned to teach in specific subject areas. The subject to which a Fellow is assigned is based on teaching eligibility, district need, and—whenever possible—the candidate’s stated preferences.

If invited to an interview, candidates will be provided with additional information on which subject area(s) they are eligible to teach. Eligibility is determined according to strict requirements set by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). For more information on subject eligibility, click here.

The process of matching Fellows to specific teaching positions is coordinated, in part, through the Chicago Teaching Fellows office. Teaching positions will be determined through a variety of processes – such as job fairs – as well as a Fellow’s own efforts in securing a teaching position.

Chicago Public Schools is a principal driven district, meaning that all school hiring is done by principals or other school-based administrators. This unique structure means that the Chicago Teaching Fellows program does not place Fellows at any school; all Fellows must interview for available positions with school administrators, giving Fellows a degree of choice regarding where they will teach.  Fellows must, however, be flexible regarding where they will teach.

We consistently ask Fellows to keep in mind that the determination of teaching positions is a challenging process and that it is often difficult to predict exact teaching positions until very close to the beginning of the school year due to mobility within the school district.

It is the mission of Chicago Teaching Fellows to work in schools with the highest need for teachers. As a result, all candidates should be prepared to teach wherever they are most needed. Teaching positions are primarily driven by school needs and by each Fellow’s qualifications. Fellows are asked to be extremely flexible with regard to the job search process.
